Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Myanmar at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Group IV of Asia/Oceania Zone. Myanmar’s team included following players:

  • Maung-Tu Maw
  • Kyaw Zaw Naing

Myanmar was placed in Group IV along with Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and United Arab Emirates. Myanmar’s players could not give satisfactory performance.

Participation and Performance of Myanmar in the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 9 teams competed in Group IV of Asia/Oceania Zone. They were divided into 2 groups. Myanmar at the 2006 Davis Cup was included in Group A along with Oman, Iraq and Qatar. Group B included United Arab Emirates, Syria, Tajikistan, Jordan and Turkmenistan. The matches were played at Al Hussein Tennis Club, Amman, Jordan from 5th to 9th April. Myanmar played the first set of matches against Oman. Myanmar had to face disappointment in these matches. They lost in all the three matches against Oman. The matches between Myanmar and Qatar were played on 7th April. Players from Myanmar showed improved performance. They won 2 matches, while Qatar won a single match. Myanmar played the set of matches against Iraq on 9th April. Myanmar could win just single match. Iraq won 2 matches. Myanmar got 3rd place in the final ranking of group A.

Myanmar at the 2006 Davis Cup had to face disappointment.
