Morocco at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Morocco at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Group I of Europe/Africa Zone. Morocco’s team included following players:

  • Mehdi Tahiri
  • Mounir El Aarej
  • Paul Capdeville
  • Rabie Chaki
  • Mehdi Ziadi


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Many countries sent their players to participate in Group I of Europe/Africa Zone. The players were from Belgium, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Morocco, Portugal, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro. Morocco’s players could not perform well.

Participation and Performance of Morocco in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the 2nd round Play-offs were played from 22nd to 24th September. Morocco played the matches against Portugal at Marrakech, Morocco. Morocco was able to win 2 matches. Portugal won 3 matches. The 1st round Play-off matches were played from 21st to 23rd July. Morocco received ‘Bye’ from the opponent team. Hence Morocco directly qualified for the 1st round. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. Morocco again received ‘Bye’ from the opponent team. The matches in the 2nd round were played from 7th to 9th April. Morocco played the matches against Czech Republic at Oujda, Morocco. Morocco’s players showed poor performance. Tomas Zib from Czech Republic defeated Morocco’s Mounir El Aarej by 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 and 6-4. Tomas Berdych from Czech Republic defeated Morocco’s Mehdi Tahiri by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2. Pair of Czech Republic, Tomas Berdych and Lukas Dlouhy defeated Morocco’s pair, Talal Ouahabi and Mehdi Ziadi by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3. Lukas Dlouhy defeated Mehdi Ziadi by 6-2, 6-1. Tomas Zib defeated Mehdi Tahiri by 6-4, 7-5. Thus, Morocco lost all five matches against Czech Republic.

Morocco at the 2006 Davis Cup was demoted to Group II of Europe/Africa Zone in 2007 due to their poor performance.
