Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played the round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Monaco at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone. Monaco’s team included following players:

  • Emmanuel Heussner
  • Guillaume Couillard
  • Thomas Drouet
  • Benjamin Balleret


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone were played in two venues. The countries that played the matches in Venue 1 were Andorra, Armenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Monaco, Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following countries played the matches at Venue 2: Botswana, Cote D’lvoire, Denmark, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia.

Participation and Performance of Monaco in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in Venue 1 were played at Teniski Klub MLADOST, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Total 8 participating countries were divided into 2 groups. Monaco at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with Moldova, Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Estonia, Lithuania, Armenia and Andorra were placed in Group A. The matches were played from 19th to 23rd July. Monaco played the matches against Turkey on 19th July. Monaco’s players put wonderful performance. They won all the three matches against Turkey. The matches between Monaco and Bosnia/ Herzegovina were played on 20th July. Monaco’s players maintained their performance. They won all three matches against Bosnia/ Herzegovina. Monaco played the matches against Moldova on 21st July. Monaco won 2 matches, while Moldova could win single match. Monaco qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round. Monaco played the matches against Estonia on 22nd July. Monaco’s players once again showed wonderful performance. They won 2 matches against Estonia. Monaco defeated Lithuania in all three matches. Monaco achieved 1st position in the final ranking of Group III.

On the whole, performance of Monaco at the 2006 Davis Cup was magnificent. They were advanced to the Group II of Europe/Africa Zone in 2007.
