Moldova at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. The World Group included total 16 teams. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Moldova at the 2006 Davis Cup was included in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone. The team of Moldova was as follows:

  • Andrei Ciumac
  • Roman Tudoreanu
  • Roman Borvanov


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone were played in two venues. The countries that played the matches in Venue 1 were Andorra, Armenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Monaco, Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following countries played the matches at Venue 2: Botswana, Cote D’lvoire, Denmark, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia.

Participation and Performance of Moldova in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in Venue 1 were played at Teniski Klub MLADOST, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Total 8 participating countries were divided into 2 groups. Moldova at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with Monaco, Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Estonia, Lithuania, Armenia and Andorra were placed in Group A. The matches were played from 19th to 23rd July. Moldova played the first set of matches against Bosnia/ Herzegovina on 19th July. Moldova’s players could not put good performance. They were able to win just single match. Bosnia/ Herzegovina won 2 matches. The matches between Moldova and Turkey were played on 20th July. Moldova’s performance was very poor. They lost all the matches against Turkey. Moldova played the matches against Monaco on 21st July. Monaco won 2 matches, while Moldova was able to win a single match. Moldova advanced to the 5th to 8th Play-off round. Moldova played the matches against Andorra on 22nd July. Moldova’s players played with determination. They won all the three matches against Andorra. The matches between Moldova and Armenia were played on 23rd July. Moldova’s players again showed wonderful performance. They won all three matches against Armenia.

On the whole, performance of Moldova at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory. They got 6th position in the final standings of Group III of Europe/Africa Zone.
