Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were 16 teams to participate in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Mexico at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Group I of Americas Zone. Mexico sent following players to take part in the competition:

  • Miguel Gallardo-Valles
  • Carlos Palencia
  • Bruno Echagaray
  • Santiago Gonzalez
  • Daniel Garza


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Mexico in the group I of the Americas zone were as follows: Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. The players from Mexico gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries.

Participation and Performance of Mexico in the 2006 Davis Cup

The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. Mexico at the 2006 Davis Cup directly played in the 1st round. The matches between Mexico and Venezuela were played at Maracay, Venezuela. Mexican players showed good performance. Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez defeated Venezuela’s Jose De Armas by 6-1, 6-0, 5-7 and 6-4. Mexico’s Miguel Gallardo-Valles defeated Venezuela’s Yohny Romero by 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 and 12-10. Mexican pair defeated Venezuela’s pair by 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-4. Mexico’s Bruno Echagaray defeated Venezuela’s Jimy Szymanski by 6-3, 6-2. Mexico won 4 matches out of 5, against Venezuela. The matches in the second round were played from 7th to 9th April. Mexico played the matches against Canada at Mexico City on clay court. Mexican player again showed their magical performance. Mexico’s Miguel Gallardo-Valles defeated Canada’s Frank Dancevic by 7-6, 6-2, 4-6 and 6-3. Santiago Gonzalez defeated Robert Steckley by 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2. Canada’s pair, Frank Dancevic and Daniel Nestor defeated Mexico’s pair, Bruno Echagaray and Santiago Gonzalez by 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 and 7-6. Santiago Gonzalez defeated Frank Dancevic by 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4. Bruno Echagaray defeated Canada’s Philip Bester by 6-3, 7-6. Mexico won 4 matches against Canada.

Mexico at the 2006 Davis Cup was promoted to World Group Play-off due to their remarkable performance.
