Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. The World Group included 16 teams. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Mauritius at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Group IV of Europe/Africa Zone. Mauritius sent following players to compete in the tournament:

  • Kamil Patel
  • Alexandre Daruty
  • Bruno Goroyam


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Many countries actively participated in Europe/Africa Zone. They were divided into 4 groups. Group IV included following countries: Azerbaijan, Iceland, Madagascar, Malta, Mauritius, San Marino, Uganda and Senegal.

Participation and Performance of Mauritius in the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 8 countries in Group IV were divided into 2 groups. Mauritius at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with Senegal, Madagascar and Azerbaijan. Group A included Iceland, Malta, San Marino and Uganda. Senegal withdrew before the tournament. The matches were played from 19th to 23rd July at Marsa Sports Club, Marsa, Malta. Mauritius played the first set of matches against Madagascar on 20th July. Players from Mauritius played well and won 2 matches. Madagascar won just single match. Mauritius played the matches against Azerbaijan on 21st July. Players of Mauritius again showed good performance. They won 2 matches against Azerbaijan. Mauritius qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round. Mauritius played the matches against San Marino on 22nd July. Mauritius won 2 matches, while San Marino could win single match. The matches between Mauritius and Iceland were played on 23rd July. Players from Mauritius put wonderful performance. They won all the three matches against Iceland.

The performance of Mauritius at the 2006 Davis Cup was really remarkable. They achieved 1st position in the final ranking of Group IV. It resulted in promotion of Mauritius to Group III of Europe/Africa Zone.
