Malta at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Malta at the 2006 Davis Cup was included in Group IV of Europe/Africa Zone. The team of Malta was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Many countries were eager to compete in this prestigious international tennis tournament. They sent their players with great hopes. Following countries competed in Group IV of Europe/Africa Zone: Azerbaijan, Iceland, Madagascar, Malta, Mauritius, San Marino, Uganda and Senegal.

Participation and Performance of Malta in the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 8 countries in Group IV were divided into 2 groups. Malta at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with Iceland, San Marino and Uganda. Group B included Mauritius, Senegal, Madagascar and Azerbaijan. Senegal withdrew before the tournament. The matches were played from 19th to 23rd July at Marsa Sports Club, Marsa, Malta. Malta played the matches against Uganda on 19th July. Malta won 2 matches, while Uganda won a single match. The matches between Malta and Iceland were played on 20th July. Malta’s players could not perform well. They could win just single match. Iceland won 2 matches. Malta played the matches against San Marino on 21st July. Malta again had to face disappointment. They were able to win single match. San Marino won 2 matches. Malta forwarded to the 5th to 7th Play-off round. Malta played the matches against Azerbaijan on 22nd July. Malta won 2 matches, while Azerbaijan won only one match.

The performance of Malta at the 2006 Davis Cup was poor compared to other countries. They got 5th place in final standings of Group IV.
