Malaysia at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to participate in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Malaysia at the 2006 Davis Cup was included in Group II of Asia/Oceania Zone. Following players from Malaysia took part in the tournament:

Popularity of Tennis spread all over the world. Many teams from different countries enthusiastically participated in this tournament. The countries in the Group II of Asia/Oceania Zone were Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand and Pacific Oceania.

Participation and Performance of Malaysia in the 2006 Davis Cup

Malaysia played the matches in the Play-off round. The matches were held from 7th to 9th April. Malaysia at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first set of matches against Pacific Oceania at Noumea, New Caledonia on hard court. West Nott from Pacific Oceania defeated Yew-Ming Si from Malaysia by 6-2, 6-1 and 2-1. Michael Leong from Pacific Oceania defeated Selvam Veerasingam from Malaysia by 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1. Malaysia’s pair defeated pair of Pacific Oceania by 6-4, 7-6, 3-6 and 7-6. Michael Leong from Pacific Oceania defeated Yew-Ming Si by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2. Juan Sebastien Langton from Pacific Oceania defeated Malaysia’s Selvam Veerasingam by 6-2, 6-1 and 4-5. Pacific Oceania won 3 matches, while Malaysia was able to win 2 matches. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. Malaysia played the matches against Indonesia at Balikpapan, Indonesia. Malaysia had to face disappointment in these matches. Indonesia’s Suwandi Suwandi defeated Malaysia’s Abdul-Hazli Bin Zainuddin by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2. Prima Simpatiaji from Indonesia defeated Malaysia’s Razlan Rawi by 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1. Indonesian pair defeated Malaysia’s pair by 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0. Elbert Sie from Indonesia defeated Malaysia’s Mohammed-Faizal Bin Othman by 6-1, 6-0. Faisal Aidil defeated Muhd-Ashaari Bin Zainal-Abidin by 6-1, 6-4. Malaysia lost in all the five matches against Indonesia. As a result, Malaysia could not advance to the second round.

Malaysia at the 2006 Davis Cup put very disappointing performance. Hence they were demoted to Group III of Asia/Oceania Zone.
