Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams were included in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Madagascar at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group IV of Europe/Africa Zone. Following players from Madagascar took part in the tournament:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Following countries participated in Europe/Africa Zone: Azerbaijan, Iceland, Madagascar, Malta, Mauritius, San Marino, Uganda and Senegal. But Senegal withdrew before starting the tournament.

Participation and Performance of Madagascar in the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 8 countries took part in the competition. They were divided into 2 groups. Madagascar at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with Mauritius, Azerbaijan and Senegal. Group A included Iceland, San Marino, Malta and Uganda. Senegal withdrew before the tournament. The matches were played at Marsa Sports Club, Marsa, Malta on hard court, from 19th to 23rd July. Madagascar played the first set of matches against Azerbaijan on 19th July. Players from Madagascar showed wonderful performance. Madagascar won all three matches against Azerbaijan. The matches between Mauritius and Madagascar were played on 21st July. Madagascar had to face disappointment in these matches. They were able to win just single match. Mauritius won 2 matches. Madagascar qualified for the 1st to 4th play-off round. Madagascar played the first set of matches against Iceland on 2nd July. Madagascar won 2 matches against Iceland. Iceland was able to win just single match. The matches between San Marino and Madagascar were played on 23rd July. Players of Madagascar gave wonderful performance. They won all three matches against San Marino.

Madagascar at the 2006 Davis Cup showed amazing performance. They got 2nd position in the final overall standings of Group IV. Hence they got the place in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone in 2007.
