Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. The World Group included total 16 teams. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Macedonia, F.Y.R. at the 2006 Davis Cup was included in the Group II of Europe/Africa Zone. Macedonia, F.Y.R. sent following players:

  • Lazar Magdincev
  • Dimitar Grabuloski
  • Predrag Rusevski
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Tennis got world-wide popularity. Many countries were eager to participate and win this prestigious tournament. Macedonia, F.Y.R. got the place in Group II of Europe/Africa Zone along with Algeria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Participation and Performance of Chile in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the first round were played from 7th to 9th April. Macedonia, F.Y.R. at the 2006 Davis Cup directly played in the first round. They played the first set of matches against Greece at Athens, Greece. Players from Macedonia played with determination. As a result, they won 4 matches against Greece. Greece could win just single match. Macedonia forwarded to the 2nd round. The 2nd round matches were played from 21st to 23rd July. Macedonia played the matches against Norway at Oslo, Norway on clay court. Macedonia’s players again performed well and won 3 matches against Norway. Macedonia advanced to the 3rd round. The matches in the 3rd round were played from 22nd to 24th September. Macedonia played the matches against Finland at Skopje, Macedonia on clay court. Macedonia’s players maintained their performance in the third round too. Macedonia won 3 matches against Finland. Finland could win 2 matches.

Macedonia, F.Y.R. at the 2006 Davis Cup showed excellent performance. Hence they were promoted to Group I of Europe/Africa Zone.
