Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Lithuania at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed Group III of Europe/Africa Zone. Lithuania’s team included following players:

  • Daniel Lencina-Ribes
  • Gvidas Sabeckis
  • Denis Riabuchin
  • Mindauqas Celedinas
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Group III of Europe/Africa Zone included 2 venues. The countries that played at venue 1 were Armenia, Andorra, Estonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, Moldova, Monaco and Turkey. Following were the countries that played the matches at venue 2: Botswana, Cote D’lvoire, Ghana, Denmark, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia.

Participation and Performance of Lithuania in the 2006 Davis Cup

Lithuania at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches at Teniski Klub MLADOST, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The matches were played from 19th to 23rd July. Lithuania was placed in Group A along with Estonia, Armenia and Andorra. Group B included Monaco, Turkey, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lithuania played the first set of matches against Andorra on 19th July. Players from Lithuania showed bright performance. They won all three matches against Andorra. The matches between Lithuania and Estonia were played on 20th July. Estonia won 2 matches, while Lithuania was able to win just single match. Lithuania played the matches against Armenia on 21st July. Lithuania won 2 matches against Armenia. Lithuania qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round. Lithuania played the matches against Turkey on 22nd July. Lithuania’s players performed well and won 2 matches. Turkey was able to win just single match. The matches between Lithuania and Monaco were played on 23rd July. Lithuania could not show good performance. Lithuania lost all the three matches against Monaco. Lithuania got 4th position in the final standings.

On the whole, performance of Lithuania at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
