Luxembourg at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Luxembourg at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Europe/Africa Zone. It was included in the group I. The team of Luxembourg was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

As tennis got world-wide popularity, many countries actively participated in this prestigious tournament. The countries in Group I of Europe/Africa Zone were Belgium, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Morocco, Portugal, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro.

Participation and Performance of Luxembourg in the 2006 Davis Cup

The 1st round matches were played from 10th to 12th February 2006. Luxembourg at the 2006 Davis Cup played directly in the first round. Luxembourg played the first set of matches against Portugal at Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg on Indoor hard court. Portugal’s Rui Machado defeated Laurent Bram from Luxembourg by 7-5, 6-4 and 6-2. Gilles Muller from Luxembourg defeated Portugal’s Frederico Gil by 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4. Pair of Luxembourg defeated Portugal’s pair by 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and 6-1. Gilles Muller defeated Rui Machado by 7-6, 7-6 and 6-1. Gilles Kremer defeated Goncalo Nicau from Portugal by 6-7, 6-4 and 6-4. Thus, Luxembourg won 4 matches against Portugal. Luxembourg forwarded to the 2nd round. The 2nd round matches were played from 7th to 9th April. The matches between Italy and Luxembourg were played at Torre del Greco, Italy. Players from Luxembourg didn’t succeed to give good performance. They lost in all five matches against Italy. Italy’s Filippo Volandri defeated Gilles Kremer by 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2. Andreas Seppi from Italy defeated Laurent Bram by 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3. Italian pair defeated pair of Luxembourg by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4. Filippo Volandri defeated Laurent Bram by 6-3, 6-1. Georgia Galimberti defeated Gilles Kremer by 6-1, 6-3.

Luxembourg at the 2006 Davis Cup had to face disappointment.
