Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Lebanon at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the group II of Asia/Oceania Zone. Lebanon sent following players to participate in the tournament:

  • John El Khoury
  • Georgia Bedran
  • Ibrahim Abou Chahine
  • Antoine Breikeh


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Lebanon was placed in Group II of Asia/Oceania Zone. Other countries in this group were Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, New Zealand and Pacific Oceania. The players from Lebanon put very poor performance.

Participation and Performance of Lebanon in the 2006 Davis Cup

Lebanon at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Kuwait in the Play-off round at Jounieh, Lebanon. The matches were played from 7th to 9th April. Kuwait’s Abdullah Magdas defeated Lebanon’s Antoine Breikeh by 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1. Kuwait’s Mohammad Ghareeb defeated John El Khoury from Lebanon by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0. Kuwait’s pair, Mohammad Ghareeb and Mohammad-Khalig Siddiq defeated Lebanon’s pair, Georgia Bedran and Antoine Breikeh by 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3. Ahmad Muhammad from Kuwait defeated Lebanon’s Georgia Bedran by 6-1, 6-4. Abdullah Magdas defeated Lebanon’s Ibrahim Abou Chahine by 6-1, 6-0. Lebanon lost in all the five matches against Kuwait. The 1st round matches were played from 10th to 12th February 2006. Lebanon played the matches against New Zealand at Auckland, New Zealand. In these matches also, Lebanon’s players could not show any progress. Mark Nielsen from New Zealand defeated Karim Alayli from Lebanon by 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2. New Zealand’s Daniel King-Turner defeated Lebanon’s Patrick Chucri by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1. New Zealand’s pair defeated pair of Lebanon by 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1. Jose Statham from New Zealand defeated Lebanon’s Wahib Maknieh by 6-4, 6-3. Daniel King-Turner defeated Karim Alayli by 6-3, 6-4. Lebanon again lost in all five matches against New Zealand. As a result, they could not advance to the next round.

The performance of Lebanon at the 2006 Davis Cup was very disappointing.
