Latvia at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Latvia at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Europe/Africa Zone. It was included in the group II. The players of Latvia were as follows:

Latvia was placed in Group II of Europe/Africa zone along with Algeria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Participation and Performance of Latvia in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the Play-off round were played from 21st to 23rd July. Latvia at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first set of matches against South Africa at Jurmala, Latvia on clay court. Latvia’s Andis Juska defeated South African player, Rik De Voest by 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2. Ernests Gulbis from Latvia defeated Fritz Wolmarans from South Africa by 7-5, 6-2 and 6-4. Latvia’s pair, Ernests Gulbis and Andis Juska defeated South African pair, Chris Haggard and Izak Vander Merwe by 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2. Latvia’s Deniss Pavlovs was defeated by Izak Vander Merwe by 6-3, 6-4. Fritz Wolmarans defeated Karlis Lejnieks by 6-0, 6-0. Latvia won 3 matches, while South Africa won 2 matches. Latvia forwarded to the 1st round. The matches in the 1st round were played from 7th to 9th April. Latvia played the matches against Poland at Poznan, Poland. Players from Latvia could not show good performance. Poland’s Michal Przysiezny defeated Ernests Gulbis by 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 and 7-6. Likasz Kubot from Poland defeated Latvia’s Andis Juska by 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 3-6 and 8-6. Poland’s pair defeated Latvia’s pair by 6-3, 7-6 and 6-1. Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg defeated Deniss Pavlovs by 6-3, 6-2. Michal Przysiezny defeated Karlis Lejnieks by 6-2, 7-6. Thus, Latvia lost all the five matches against Poland. Hence they could not advance to the 2nd round.

Overall performance of Latvia at the 2006 Davis Cup was disappointing.
