Kuwait at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Kuwait at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Asia/Oceania Zone. It got the place in group II. The team of Kuwait was as follows:

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Kuwait in the group II of the Asia/Oceania zone were as follows: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand and Pacific Oceania. The players from Kuwait gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries.

Participation and Performance of Kuwait in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the Play-off round were played from 7th to 9th April. Kuwait at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Lebanon at Jounieh, Lebanon on clay court. Participants from Kuwait played with determination. Kuwait’s Abdullah Magdas defeated Lebanon’s Antoine Breikeh by 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1. Kuwait’s Mohammad Ghareeb defeated John El Khoury from Lebanon by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0. Kuwait’s pair, Mohammad Ghareeb and Mohammad-Khalig Siddiq defeated Lebanon’s pair, Georgia Bedran and Antoine Breikeh by 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3. Ahmad Muhammad from Kuwait defeated Lebanon’s Georgia Bedran by 6-1, 6-4. Abdullah Magdas defeated Lebanon’s Ibrahim Abou Chahine by 6-1, 6-0. Thus Kuwait won all the five matches against Lebanon. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. Kuwait played the matches with Kazakhstan at Kuwait City, Kuwait. Mohammad Ghareeb defeated Dmitriy Makeyev from Kazakhstan by 6-4, 6-4 and 7-5. Alexei Kedryuk from Kazakhstan defeated Abdullah Magdas by 6-4, 6-1 and 7-5. Kazakhstan’s pair, Alexei Kedryuk and Dmitriy Makeyev defeated Kuwait’s pair, Mohammad Ghareeb and Mohammad-Khalig Siddiq by 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-2. Mohammad Ghareeb defeated Alexei Kedryuk by 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 6-2 and 11-9. Dmitriy Makeyev defeated Abdullah Magdas by 6-2, 7-6, 3-6 and 6-0.

Thus, Kuwait won 2 matches out of 5, against Kazakhstan.
Hence they could not advance to the 2nd round. Kuwait at the 2006 Davis Cup showed average performance.
