Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Korea Rep.at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Asia/Oceania Zone. It was included in the group I. The team of Korea Rep. was as follows:

  • Hyung-Taik Lee
  • Oh-Hee Kwon
  • Hee-Seok Chung
  • Woong-Sun Jun
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Korea Republic was placed Group I of Asia/Oceania Zone. Other countries in this group were China, Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, Pakistan, Thailand and Uzbekistan. Players from Korea Rep. played with determination. They showed very good performance.

Participation and Performance of Korea Rep. in the 2006 Davis Cup

The 1st round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. Korea Rep. at the 2006 Davis Cup directly played their matches in the first round. Korea played the first set of matches against India at Changwon, South Korea. Hee-Seok Chung from South Korea defeated India’s Rohan Bopanna by 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4. Hyung-Taik Lee from Korea defeated Indian Prakash Amritraj by 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0. Korean pair, Woong-Sun Jun and Oh-Hee Kwon was defeated by Indian pair, Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes by 2-6, 6-1, 3-6 and 2-6. Hyung-Taik Lee defeated Rohan Bopanna by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2. Woong-Sun Jun defeated Prakash Amritraj by 6-3, 3-6 and 7-5. India could win only one match. South Korea won 4 matches. Korea Rep. forwarded to the 2nd round. The matches in the 2nd round were played from 7th to 9th April. South Korea played the matches against Chinese Taipei at Taipei, Taiwan. Hyung-Taik Lee defeated Ti Chen from Chinese Taipei by 6-1, 6-4 and 7-6. Yeu-Tzuoo Wang from Chinese Taipei defeated Woong-Sun Jun from Korea Rep. by 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and 6-2. Korean pair, Hee-Seok Chung and Hyung-Taik Lee defeated Yeu-Tzuoo Wang and Chu-Huan Yi by 6-3, 6-1. Hyung-Taik Lee defeated Yeu-Tzuoo Wang by 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 and 6-0. Woong-Sun Jun from Korea Rep. defeated Chu-Huan Yi from Chinese Taipei by 6-7, 7-6 and 7-5. Thus Korea won 4 matches and Chinese Taipei won just single match.

The performance of Korea Rep. at the 2006 Davis Cup was superb. As a result, South Korea advanced to the World Group Play-off.
