Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were 16 teams in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Kazakhstan at the 2006 Davis Cup played in Asia/Oceania Zone. It was placed in the group II. The team of Kazakhstan was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Following countries participated in the Group II of Asia/Oceania Zone: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand and Pacific Oceania. Players from Kazakhstan put magnificent performance.

Participation and Performance of Kazakhstan in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the 1st round were played from 10th to 12th February. Kazakhstan at the 2006 Davis Cup directly played the matches in the first round. Kazakhstan played the first set of matches against Kuwait at Kuwait City, Kuwait, on hard court. Kazakhstan played well and won 3 matches. Kuwait could win 2 matches. Kazakhstan advanced to the 2nd round. The 2nd round matches were played from 7th to 9th April. The matches between Kazakhstan and New Zealand were played at Almaty, Kazakhstan on Indoor hard court. Kazakhstan again showed good performance. Kazakhstan won 3 matches, while New Zealand won 2 matches. Kazakhstan forwarded to the 3rd round. The matches in the 3rd round were played from 22nd to 24th September. Kazakhstan played the matches against Indonesia at Almaty, Kazakhstan. Players from Kazakhstan maintained their performance. They won 3 matches. Indonesia was able to win 2 matches.

Kazakhstan at the 2006 Davis Cup showed remarkable performance. As a result, Kazakhstan was promoted to Group I in 2007.
