Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Jordan at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Asia/Oceania Zone. It was placed in Group IV. The players in the team of Jordan were as follows:

  • Ahmed Al Hadid
  • Ahmed Tbayshat

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Jordan in the group IV of the Asia/Oceania zone were as follows: Iraq, Myanmar, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and United Arab Emirates. The players from Jordan could not show satisfactory performance.

Participation and Performance of Jordan in the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 9 countries took part in Group IV of Asia/ Oceania Zone. They were divided into two groups. Jordan at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with United Arab Emirates, Syria, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Oman, Iraq, Myanmar and Qatar were placed in Group A. The matches in Group IV were played from 5th to 9th April at Al Hussein Tennis Club, Amman, Jordan. Jordan played the first set of matches against United Arab Emirates on 6th April. M Al Balushi from U.A.E. defeated Jordan’s T Talal-Shakwa by 6-2, 1-6 and 6-2. O. Bahrouzyan-Awadhy from U.A.E. defeated Jordan’s A Fadda by 6-3, 6-1. Pair of U.A.E., O. Bahrouzyan-Awadhy and H. Abbas defeated Jordan’s pair, A. Al Hadid and A Tbayshat by 6-1, 6-1. Thus, Jordan lost all the three matches against United Arab Emirates. The matches between Jordan and Tajikistan were played in 7th April. M Yakhyaev from Tajikistan defeated T. Talal-Shakwa from Jordan by 3-6, 6-3 and 9-7. D. Sharifi defeated Jordan’s A Fadda by 7-6, 3-6 and 6-4. Jordan’s pair, A. Al Hadid and A Tbayshat defeated R Rajabaliev and M Yakhyaev from Tajikistan by 7-5, 6-4. Tajikistan won 2 matches. Jordan was able to win just single match. Jordan’s players showed wonderful performance against Turkmenistan. They won all the three matches against Turkmenistan. The matches between Jordan and Syria were played on 9th April. Syria’s I Tawil defeated T. Talal-Shakwa from Jordan by 6-2, 6-7 and 6-2. Jordan’s A Fadda defeated H Maarouf from Syria by 6-3, 6-2. Syria’s pair, M Salim and Y Sheet defeated Jordan’s pair, A Fadda and T Talal-Shakwa by 6-2, 2-6 and 6-2. Jordan won single match and Syria won 2 matches.

Jordan at the 2006 Davis Cup had to face disappointment. They got 4th place in Group B in final standings.
