Jamaica at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international event in tennis for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were 16 teams included in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Jamaica at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Americas Zone. It was included in the group II. The team of Jamaica was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Jamaica in the group II of the Americas zone were as follows: Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and Netherlands Antilles. The players from Jamaica could not show good performance.

Participation and Performance of Chile in the 2006 Davis Cup

The play-off matches were played from 7th to 9th April. Jamaica at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Guatemala at Montego Bay, Jamaica on hard court. Jamaica’s Ryan Russell defeated Israel Morales from Guatemala by 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2. Guatemala’s Cristian Paiz defeated Jamaica’s Damion Johnson by 6-4, 6-4, 5-7 and 6-3. Jamaica’s pair, Ryan Russell and Jermaine Smith defeated Guatemala’s pair, Manuel Chavez and Luis Perez-Chete by 7-6, 6-3 and 6-1. Ryan Russell from Jamaica defeated Cristian Paiz from Guatemala by 6-3, 6-0 and 3-0. Jamaica’s Eldad Campbell was defeated by Israel Morales from Guatemala by 6-4, 6-1. Jamaica won 3 matches while Guatemala won 2 matches. Jamaica advanced to the 1st round. The matches in the 1st round were played from 10th to 12th February. Jamaica played the matches against Dominican Republic at Santiago, Dominican Republic on clay court. Jamaica’s players didn’t show good performance. Jhonson Garcia from Dominican Republic defeated Jamaica’s Scott Willinsky by 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0. Victor Estrella from Dominican Republic defeated Ryan Russell by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-0. Pair of Dominican Republic, Victor Estrella and Jhonson Garcia defeated Jamaica’s pair, Ryan Russell and Jermaine Smith by 6-3, 6-3 and 7-5. Henry Estrella from Dominican Republic defeated Jamaica’s Elvis Henry by 3-6, 6-4 and 6-2. Jesus Francisco Felix from Dominican Republic defeated Jamaica’s Scott Willinsky by 6-2, 6-7 and 6-3. Jamaica lost all the five matches against Dominican Republic. Hence they could forward to the 2nd round.

Thus, performance of Jamaica at the 2006 Davis Cup was very disappointing.
