Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Italy at the 2006 Davis Cup got the place in Europe/Africa Zone. It was included in the group I. Italy sent the following players to compete in the tournament:

  • Giorgio Galimberti
  • Filippo Volandri
  • Andreas Seppi
  • Daniele Bracciali

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Italy in the group I of the Europe/Africa zone were as follows: Belgium, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Israel, Luxembourg, Morocco, Portugal, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro. The players from Italy showed magnificent performance.

Participation and Performance of Italy in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the first round were played from 10th to 12th February. Italy received ‘Bye’ from the opponent team. Hence Italy directly qualified for the 2nd round. The 2nd round matches were played from 7th to 9th April. Italy played the matches against Luxembourg at Torre del Greco, Italy. Italian players took hard efforts to win the matches. As a result, they won all five matches against Luxembourg. Filippo Volandri from Italy defeated Gilles Kremer from Luxembourg by 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2. Andreas Seppi defeated Laurent Bram by 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3. Italian pair, Daniele Bracciali and Giorgio Galimberti defeated pair of Luxembourg, Laurent Bram and Gilles Kremer by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4. Filippo Volandri defeated Laurent Bram by 6-3, 6-1. Giorgio Galimberti defeated Gilles Kremer by 6-1, 6-3.

Thus Italy at the 2006 Davis Cup showed excellent performance. As a result, they were promoted to World Group Play-off.
