Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Ireland at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Europe/Africa Zone. It got the place in Group II. Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup
Many countries from Europe and Africa actively participated in the tournament. Group II of Europe/Africa Zone included countries like, Algeria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Participation and Performance of Ireland in the 2006 Davis Cup
The play-off matches were played from 21st to 23rd July. Ireland at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Slovenia at Dublin, Ireland on grass court. Kevin Sorensen from Ireland was defeated by Slovenia’s Grega Zemlja by 2-6, 5-7 and 1-6. Slovenia’s Marko Tkalec defeated Ireland’s Conor Niland by 4-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-3. Slovenia’s pair, Luka Gregorc and Marko Tkalec defeated Ireland’s pair, James Clusky and Stephen Nugent by 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and 7-5. Grega Zemlja defeated Conor Niland by 6-4, 6-2. Ireland’s Stephan Nugent defeated Slovenia’s Martin Rmus by 1-6, 7-6 and 6-1. The first round matches were held from the 7th of April to the 9th of April. The first set of matches at the Davis Cup that Ireland played was against Finland. The matches were played at Helsinki, Finland on Indoor hard court. Jarkko Nieminen from Finland defeated Ireland’s Kevin Sorensen by 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2. Finland’s Juho Paukku was defeated by Ireland’s Louk Sorensen by 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3. Finland’s pair, Tuomas Ketola and Jarkko Nieminen defeated Ireland’s pair, Tristan Farron-Mahon and Kevin Sorensen by 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2. Jarkko Nieminen from Finland defeated Louk Sorensen from Ireland by 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0. Ireland’s Kevin Sorensen defeated Finland’s Juho Paukku by 6-4, 6-2. Finland won total 3 matches while Ireland won total 2 matches. As a result, Ireland could not advance to the second round.
