Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Iraq at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Asia/Oceania Zone. It was included in the group IV. The team of Iraq was as follows:

  • Haidar Kadhim
  • Nasir Al Hatam
  • Akram Al Karem


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 8 teams participated in Group IV. They were divided into 2 groups. Group A included Oman, Iraq, Myanmar and Qatar. The countries like United Arab Emirates, Syria, Tajikistan, Jordan and Turkmenistan were placed in Group B.

Participation and Performance of Iraq in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches were played at Al Hussein Tennis Club, Amman, Jordan on hard court. They were held from 5th to 9th April. Iraq showed good performance in these matches. Iraq played the first set of matches against Qatar on 6th April. Iraq won 2 matches. Qatar was able to win just a single match. The matches between Iraq and Oman were played on 7th April. Iraq had to face disappointment in these matches. Iran lost all the three matches against Oman. Iraq played the matches against Myanmar on 9th April. Iraq’s players showed determinant game. They won 2 matches against Myanmar. Iraq got 2nd position in Group A in final standings.

The players from Iraq at the 2006 Davis Cup showed satisfactory performance. They played with winning spirit.
