Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Iran at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Asia/Oceania Zone. It was placed in Group III. Following were the team members of Iran:

  • Mohammed Mohazebnia


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Iran in the group III of the Asia/Oceania zone were as follows: Bahrain, Bangladesh, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The players from Iran gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries.

Participation and Performance of Iran in the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 8 countries participated in Group III. They were divided into 2 groups. Iran at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Bangladesh. Countries like Sri Lanka, Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore were placed in Group A. The matches were played from 19th to 23rd July 2006 at Manila Polo Club, Makati City, Manila, Philippines. Iran played the matches against Saudi Arabia on 19th July. Iran’s players showed amazing performance and won all three matches against Saudi Arabia. The matches between Iran and Bangladesh were played on 20th July. Iran’s players again showed their wonder. They won all the three matches against Bangladesh. Iran played the matches against Bahrain on 21st July. Bahrain could not show good play against Iran. Iran repeated the history and won all three matches. Iran advanced to the 1st to 4th play-off. The matches were held on 22nd and 23rd July. Iran played the matches against Sri Lanka on 22nd July. Iran won 2 matches, while Sri Lanka won a single match. The matches between Iran and Philippines were played on 23rd July. Iran had to face disappointment in these matches. Iran was not able to win a single match. They lost all 3 matches against Philippines. However Iran secured 2nd position in the final ranking.

On the whole, performance of Iran at the 2006 Davis Cup was magnificent. They were promoted to Group II of Asia/Oceania Zone in 2007.
