Iceland at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. The World Group included 16 teams. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Iceland at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Europe/Africa Zone. It was included in the group IV. The team of Iceland included following players:

  • Arnar Sigurdsson
  • Jon-Axel Jonsson
  • Andri Jonsson
  • Magnus Gunnarsson

Iceland was included in Group IV of Europe/Africa Zone. Other participating nations in this group were Azerbaijan, Madagascar, Malta, Mauritius, San Marino, Uganda and Senegal. But Senegal withdrew before the contest. Players from Iceland showed good performance.

Participation and Performance of Iceland in the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 8 nations took part in the contest. They were divided into 2 groups. Iceland at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with San Marino, Malta and Uganda. Group B included Mauritius, Madagascar, Azerbaijan and Senegal. But Senegal withdrew before the tournament. The matches were played from 19th to 23rd July 2006 at Marsa Sports Club, Marsa, Malta. Iceland played the first set of matches against San Marino on 19th July. Iceland won 2 matches, while San Marino won just single match. The matches between Iceland and Malta were played on 20th July. Iceland continued to perform well. They won 2 matches. Malta was able to win a single match. Iceland played the matches against Uganda on 21st July. Players from Iceland again showed wonderful performance. They won 2 matches. Uganda was able to win a single match. Iceland advanced to the 1st to 4th play-off. These matches were held on 22nd and 23rd July. The matches between Iceland and San Marino were not played. The matches between Iceland and Madagascar were played on 22nd July. Iceland could not maintain their performance. They were able to win only one match. Madagascar won 2 matches. Iceland played the matches against Mauritius on 23rd July. Players from Iceland put poor performance. They lost in all three matches against Mauritius. However, Iceland got 3rd position in final standings.

Iceland at the 2006 Davis Cup showed satisfactory performance. They were promoted to Group III in 2007.
