Hungary at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation.The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Hungary at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Europe/Africa Zone. It was placed in the group II. The team of Hungary was as follows:

  • Denes Lukacs


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Hungary in the group II of the Europe/Africa zone were as follows: Algeria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The players from Hungary gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries.

Participation and Performance of Hungary in the 2006 Davis Cup

The first round matches were held from the 7th of April to the 9th of April. Hungary at the 2006 Davis Cup contested directly in the first round. The first set of matches at the Davis Cup that Hungary played was against Egypt at Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary on Indoor court. Players from Hungary showed wonderful performance. They won all five matches against Egypt. They advanced to the 2nd round. The matches in the 2nd round were played from 21st July to 23rd July. The matches between Hungary and Bulgaria were played at Plovdiv, Bulgaria on clay court. Hungary’s players maintained their performance. They won 3 matches. Bulgaria was able to win 2 matches. Hungary forwarded to the third round. The matches were played from 22nd to 24th September. Hungary played their matches against Georgia at Budapest, Hungary on clay court.

Hungary’s players failed to repeat their performance. They could win 2 matches, while Georgia won 3 matches. On the whole, performance of Hungary at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
