Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Honduras at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Americas Zone. It was included in the group III. The team of Honduras was as follows:

  • Franklin Garcia
  • Calton Alvarez
  • Jose Moncada


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Honduras was placed in Group III of Americas Zone. Other countries in this group were Cuba, Bahamas, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago. Honduras finished with poor performance.

Participation and Performance of Honduras in the 2006 Davis Cup

There were total 8 countries to participate in the tournament. They were divided into 2 groups. Honduras at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A. The matches were played at Maya Country Club, Santa Tecla, El Salvador on clay court. They were held from 14th to 18th June. Honduras played their first set of matches with Trinidad and Tobago on 14th June. S Stone from Trinidad defeated J Moncada by 6-7, 7-6 and 6-3. R Brown from Trinidad defeated C Alvarez from Honduras by 6-3, 6-2. Pair of S Stone and T Stone defeated C Caceres and F Garcia from Honduras by 6-3, 6-0. Thus Honduras lost all three matches against Trinidad and Tobago. Honduras played the matches against Puerto Rico on 15th June. Honduras could not show good performance in these matches. They lost all three matches against Puerto Rico. Honduras played the matches against Bahamas on 16th June. Players from Honduras played with determination. As a result, Honduras won 2 matches. Bahamas won in single match. Honduras forwarded to the 5th to 8th play-off. These matches were played on 17th and 18th June. The matches between Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago were not played. The matches between Honduras and Costa Rica were played on 17th June. Honduras was able to win only one match. Costa Rica won 2 matches. The matches between Honduras and Haiti were played on 18th June. Players from Honduras showed satisfactory performance. They won all three matches against Haiti.

But overall performance of Honduras at the 2006 Davis Cup was very disappointing. They got last position in final standings. As a result, Honduras was relegated to Group IV in Americas Zone.
