Haiti at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation.The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Haiti at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Americas Zone. It was placed in Group III. Haiti’s team included following players:

  • Joel Allen
  • Gael Gaetjens
  • Jean Marc Bazanne
  • Nicolas Etienne


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 8 teams took part. They were divided into 2 groups. Group A included Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago. Countries like Cuba, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Haiti were placed in Group B. Haiti’s players didn’t put satisfactory performance

Participation and Performance of Chile in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in Group III were played from 14th to 18th June. They were played at Maya Country Club, Santa Tecla, El Salvador on clay court. Haiti at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Costa Rica on 14th June. G Gaetjens from Haiti defeated F Martinez-Manrique from Costa Rica by 7-6, 3-6 and 6-4. J Marin from Costa Rica defeated J Allen from Haiti by 6-1, 6-0. Haiti’s pair, J Allen and J Bazanne defeated pair of Costa Rica, F Camacho and J Marin by 6-2, 7-5. Costa Rica won single match while Haiti won 2 matches. The matches between Haiti and El Salvador were played on 15th June. J Cuellar from El Salvador defeated J Bazanne from Haiti by 6-1, 6-4. R Arevalo-Gonzalez defeated G Gaetjens by 6-1, 6-4. Pair of R Arevalo-Gonzalez and J Cuellar defeated pair of J Allen and G Gaetjens by 6-3, 6-2. Haiti lost all three matches against El Salvador. Haiti played the matches against Cuba on 16th June. Haiti could not perform well in these matches also. They lost all three matches against Cuba. Hence they advanced to the 5th to 8th Play-off. The 5th to 8th Play-off matches were played in round robin format. The match between Haiti and Costa Rica was not played. Haiti played the matches against Trinidad and Tobago on 17th June. Haiti won 2 matches, while Trinidad and Tobago won one match. The matches between Haiti and Honduras were played on 18th June.

Haiti could not maintain their performance. They lost all three matches against Honduras.The performance of Haiti at the 2006 Davis Cup was disappointing.
