Greece at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation.

 

The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Greece at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Europe/Africa Zone. It was placed in the group II. The players in the team of Greece were as follows:

  • Konstantinos Economidis
  • Alexander Jakupovic
  • Paris Gemouchidis


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Greece was placed in Europe/Africa Zone. Other countries in this Zone were Algeria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The players from Greece could not put satisfactory performance.

Participation and Performance of Greece in the 2006 Davis Cup

Greece won 4 matches against Zimbabwe in the Play-offs matches played from 21st to 23rd July. The matches in the first round were played from 7th to 9th April. The matches between Greece and Macedonia were played at Athens, Greece on clay court. Konstantinos Economidis from Greece defeated Predrag Rusrvski from Macedonia by 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-4. Lazar Magdincev defeated Alexander Jakupovic from Greece by 7-6, 6-0 and 6-2. Pair of Alexander Jakupovic and Nikos Rovas was defeated by pair of Lazar Magdincev and Predrag Rusrvski by 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 and 2-6. Lazar Magdincev defeated Nikos Rovas by 6-2, 7-6 and 6-1. Paris Gemouchidis from Greece was defeated by Predrag Rusrvski from Macedonia by 1-6, 6-7. Macedonia won total 4 matches while Greece could win only one match. As a result, Greece was eliminated from the contest in the first round.

The performance of Greece at the 2006 Davis Cup was very disappointing.
