Ghana at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. The World Group consisted of 16 teams. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 

Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Ghana at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Europe/Africa Zone. It came under Group III. The team of Ghana was as follows:

  • Henry Adjei-Darko
  • Salifu Mohammed
  • Emmanuel Mensah


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Ghana in the group III of the Europe/Africa zone were as follows: Botswana, Cote D’lvoire, Nigeria, Rwanda, Denmark, Namibia and Tunisia. They played at Venue 2. The countries that played matches at Venue 1 were Estonia, Lithuania, Armenia, Monaco, Turkey, Andorra, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The players from Ghana gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries.

Participation and Performance of Ghana in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches were played at BTA Centre (Notswane Courts), Gaborone, Botswana on the hard court. The matches were held from 26th to 30th July. Total 8 nations competed. They were divided into two groups. Ghana at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B. The round robin format was applied. Ghana played the matches with Nigeria on 26th July. G Darkey from Ghana defeated Nigeria’s A Babalola by 6-4, 6-4. Nigeria’s J. Igbinovia defeated H. Adjei-Darko from Ghana by 6-1, 3-6 and 6-3. Nigerian pair, A Babalola and J. Igbinovia defeated Ghana’s pair, H. Adjei-Darko and G Darkey by 7-6, 6-1. The matches between Ghana and Botswana were played on 27th July. G Darkey from Ghana was defeated by B Setshogo from Botswana by 5-0. Ghana’s S Mohammed defeated P Matong from Botswana by 6-7, 6-0 and 6-1. Ghana’s pair, H. Adjei-Darko and G Darkey defeated Botswana’s pair, P Matong and B Setshogo by 6-0, 6-0. Ghana won all the three matches against Cote D’lvoire played on 28th July. The top two teams in each group advanced to the 1st – 4th Play-off. The matches between Ghana and Namibia were played in 29th July. Ghana’s players showed superb performance and won all three matches. Ghana played matches against Denmark on 30th July. Ghana could not maintain their performance. They lost all three matches against Denmark.

Ghana got 3rd position in final standings. On the whole, performance of Ghana at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
