Germany at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation.

 

The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Germany at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in the World Group. Germany’s team included following players:

  • Michael Kohlmann
  • Rainer Schuettler
  • Tommy Haas
  • Nicolas Kiefer
  • Alexander Waske
  • Florian Mayer


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Germany played in the World Group. Other countries in the World group were Croatia, Austria, Argentina, Sweden, Spain, Belarus, Australia, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Russia, Chile, Romania, United States and Slovak Republic. But Germany’s players could not put good performance.

Participation and Performance of Germany in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the first round were played from 10th to 12th February. Germany at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first set of matches at Halle, Germany on Indoor hard court. Sebastien Grosjean from France defeated Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer by 7-5, 7-6 and 6-0. Richard Gasquet from France defeated Tommy Haas from Germany by 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-3. Pair from France, Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra defeated Germany’s pair, Tommy Haas and Alexander Waske by 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1. Germany’s Rainer Schuettler defeated Arnaud Clement from France by 6-4, 6-3. France’s Michael Llodra was defeated by Germany’s Tommy Haas by 6-3, 6-3. France won 3 matches while Germany won 2 matches. The losers in the first round competed in Play-off ties with Zonal group I qualifiers. The matches in the Play-off ties were played from 22nd to 24th September. Germany showed good performance in World Group Play-offs. The matches between Germany and Thailand were played at Dusseldorf, Germany on clay-court. Germany won 4 matches and Thailand won just single match.

Thus Germany at the 2006 Davis Cup showed poor performance. They were eliminated from the World Group matches in the first round. However, they performed well in World Group Play-offs and qualified for World Group in 2007.
