France at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation.

 

The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. France at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in the World Group. Following players from France participated in the tournament:

Total 16 teams competed in the World Group. Following countries along with France took part in the competition: Russia, Chile, Romania, Croatia, Germany, Australia, Belgium, United States, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Belarus, Austria and Argentina. Players from France showed average performance.

Participation and Performance of France in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the first round were played from 10th to 12th February. France at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Germany at Halle, Germany on Indoor hard court. Sebastien Grosjean from France defeated Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer by 7-5, 7-6 and 6-0. Richard Gasquet from France defeated Tommy Haas from Germany by 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-3. Pair from France, Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra defeated Germany’s pair, Tommy Haas and Alexander Waske by 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1. Germany’s Rainer Schuettler defeated Arnaud Clement from France by 6-4, 6-3. France’s Michael Llodra was defeated by Germany’s Tommy Haas by 6-3, 6-3. France won 3 matches while Germany won 2 matches. France forwarded to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal matches were played from 7th to 9th April. France played the matches against Russia at Pau, France. Russian Marat Safin defeated Richard Gasquet from France by 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 and 6-1. Nikolay Davydenko from Russia defeated Arnaud Clement from France by 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and 7-6. Pair from France, Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra defeated Russian pair, Dmitry Tursunov and Mikhail Youzhny by 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 5-7 and 6-2. Russian Dmitry Tursunov defeated Richard Gasquet from France by 6-1, 3-6, 6-7, 6-3 and 7-5. Michael Llodra from France was defeated by Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny by 2-6, 6-4 and 6-7.

Russia won 4 matches and France won just single match. France at the 2006 Davis Cup showed disappointing performance. They were eliminated from the tournament in the quarterfinals.
