Finland at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation.

 

The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Finland at the 2006 Davis Cup was included in Europe/Africa Zone. It was included in the group II. The team of Finland was as follows:

Finland was in the group II of the Europe/Africa zone along with Zimbabwe, Norway, Greece, Macedonia, Ireland, Algeria, and Slovenia. The players from Finland put good performance.

Participation and Performance of Finland in the 2006 Davis Cup

Finland at the 2006 Davis Cup directly played in the first round. It was held from 7th to 9th April. Finland played first set of matches against Ireland at Helsinki, Finland on Indoor hard court. Jarkko Nieminen from Finland defeated Ireland’s Kevin Sorensen by 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2. Finland’s Juho Paukku was defeated by Ireland’s Louk Sorensen by 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3. Finland’s pair, Tuomas Ketola and Jarkko Nieminen defeated Ireland’s pair, Tristan Farron-Mahon and Kevin Sorensen by 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2. Jarkko Nieminen from Finland defeated Louk Sorensen from Ireland by 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0. Ireland’s Kevin Sorensen defeated Finland’s Juho Paukku by 6-4, 6-2. Finland won total 3 matches while Ireland won total 2 matches. Finland advanced to the second round. The matches in the second round were played from 21st July to 23rd July. Finland played the matches against Algeria at Hanko, Finland. Timo Nieminen from Finland defeated Slimane Saoudi from Algeria by 7-6, 7-6 and 6-3. Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen defeated Algeria’s Abdel-Hak Hameurlaine by 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1. Finland’s pair, Tuomas Ketola and Jarkko Nieminen defeated Algerian pair, Abdel-Hak Hameurlaine and Slimane Saoudi by 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 and 6-4. Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen defeated Slimane Saoudi from Algeria by 6-2, 6-1. Algeria’s Abdel-Hak Hameurlaine defeated Lauri Kiiski from Finland by 6-4, 6-2. Thus Finland won 4 matches and Algeria won a single match. Finland advanced to 3rd round. The third round was played from 22nd to 24th September. The matches between Finland and Macedonia were played at Skopje, Macedonia on clay court. Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen defeated Macedonia’s Predrag Rusevski by 4-6, 3-1, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4. Lazar Magdincev from Macedonia defeated Finland’s Timo Nieminen by 6-4, 6-2, 2-6 and 7-6. Macedonia’s pair, Lazar Magdincev and Predrag Rusevski defeated Finland’s pair, Tuomas Ketola and Jarkko Nieminen by 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 1-6 and 6-2. Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen defeated Lazar Magdincev by 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1. Macedonia’s Predrag Rusevski defeated Finland’s Timo Nieminen by 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6 and 6-4. Thus Finland won 2 matches and Macedonia won 3 matches.

Overall performance of Finland at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory. They forwarded up to the third round. But they could not show better performance in the third round.
