Estonia at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation.

 

The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Estonia at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Europe/Africa Zone. It was placed in Group III. Following players from Estonia competed in the tournament:

  • Jurgen Zopp
  • Vladimir Ivanov
  • Jaak Poldma


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Estonia was placed in the group III of the Europe/Africa zone. Other countries in this group were Lithuania, Armenia, Andorra, Turkey, Monaco, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The players from Estonia tried their best. The countries played at Venue 2 were Denmark, Namibia, Tunisia, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’lvoire and Botswana.

Participation and Performance of Estonia in the 2006 Davis Cup

There were total 8 participating nations. They were divided into 2 groups such as Group A and Group B. Estonia at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A. The matches were played from 19th to 23rd July at Teniski Klub MLADOST, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina on clay court. The round robin format was applied. The first set of matches was played between Estonia and Armenia on 19th July. Estonia won 2 matches while Armenia won single match. Estonia played the matches against Lithuania on 20th July. Estonia’s players again showed wonderful performance and won 2 matches. Lithuania was able to win a single match. Estonia played the matches against Andorra on 21st July. Estonia won all the three matches. The top two teams in each group forwarded to 1st-4th Play-off. These matches were played on 22nd and 23rd July 2006. The first match between Estonia and Lithuania was not played. Estonia played the set of matches against Monaco on 22nd July. Monaco won 2 matches while Estonia won a single match. Estonia played the matches against Turkey on 23rd July. Turkey won 2 matches. Estonia’s players could not maintain their performance. They won only one match. However, Estonia got second position in the final ranking.

The performance of Estonia at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory. They were promoted to Group II in Europe/ Africa Zone.
