El Salvador at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. The World Group included 16 teams. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation.

 

The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. El Salvador at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Americas Zone. It was placed in the group III. The team of El Salvador was as follows:

  • Jose Antonio Alfaro
  • Jose Baires


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with El Salvador in the group III of the Americas zone were as follows: Cuba, Costa Rica, Haiti, Honduras, Trinidad, Puerto Rico and Bahamas. The players from El Salvador gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries

Participation and Performance of Chile in the 2006 Davis Cup

El Salvador at the 2006 Davis cup was placed in group III of Americas Zone. The matches were played at Maya Country Club, Santa Tecla, El Salvador on clay court. The matches were held from 14th June to 18th June. They were played in round robin format. El Salvador played first set of matches with Cuba on 14th June. El Salvador won 2 matches while Cuba won 1 match. The matches between El Salvador and Haiti were played on 15th June. El Salvador won all the five matches. El Salvador played the third set of matches with Costa Rica on 16th June. El Salvador won in single match and Costa Rica won two matches. The matches for 1st to 4th Play-off were played on round robin format. El Salvador played the matches with Bahamas on 17th June. El Salvador won in all the three matches. El Salvador played the matches against Puerto Rico on 18th June.

El Salvador won 2 matches while Puerto Rico won a single match. Thus El Salvador was the topper in group III.El Salvador at the 2006 Davis Cup showed satisfactory performance. As a result, they were promoted to Group II in Americas Zone.
