Egypt at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin mathces with promotion and relegation.

 

The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Egypt at the 2006 Davis Cup played in Europe/Africa Zone. It was included in the group II. The team of Egypt was as follows:

  • Mohammed Maamoun
  • Sherif Sabry
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Egypt was placed in Group II of Europe/Africa Zone. Other participating countries in group II were Hungary, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia, Poland and South Africa. Egypt’s players tried their best. But they were not much successful.

Participation and Performance of Egypt in the 2006 Davis Cup

Egypt at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches with Hungary in the first round. The matches were played from 7th to 9th April. The matches were played at Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary on Indoor court. The players from Egypt could not show good performance. Hungary’s Sebo Kiss defeated Egypt’s Karim Maamoun by 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1. Hungary’s Kornel Bardoczky defeated Egypt’s Sherif Sabry by 7-6, 6-1 and 6-3. Hungary’s pair, Kornel Bardoczky and Gergely Kisgyorgy defeated Egypt’s Karim Maamoun and Mohammed Maamoun by 6-4, 7-6 and 6-4. Kornel Bardoczky defeated Mohammed Maamoun by 7-5, 6-3. Sebo Kiss defeated Sherif Sabry by 6-4, 6-3. Thus Egypt lost all five matches against Hungary. The play-off matches were held from 21st to 23rd July. Egypt played the matches against Cyprus at Heliopolis Sporting Club, Cairo, Egypt on clay court. Egypt’s Karim Maamoun defeated Christopher Koutrouzas from Cyprus by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0. Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus defeated Egypt’s Mohammed Maamoun by 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4. Pair of Cyprus defeated Egypt’s pair by 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4. Marcos Baghdatis defeated Karim Maamoun by 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3. Sherif Sabry defeated Petros Baghdatis by 6-3, 6-2. Cyprus won 3 matches, while Egypt won 2 matches.

Overall performance of Egypt at the 2006 Davis Cup was very disappointing. As a result, they were demoted to Group III of Europe/Africa Zone in 2007.
