Dominican Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis team event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 
Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The first round matches were played from 10th to 12th February.The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Dominican Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in Americas Zone. It was included in the group II. The team of Dominican Republic was as follows:

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Dominican Republic in the group II of the Americas zone were as follows: Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, Guatemala, Jamaica and Netherlands Antilles. The players from Dominican Republic gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries.

Participation and Performance of Dominican Republic in the 2006 Davis Cup

The first round matches were held from the 10th February to 12th February. Dominican Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup contested directly in the first round. The first set of matches at the Davis Cup that Dominican Republic played was against Jamaica. These games were held in Santiago, Dominican Republic. The matches were played on clay court. Players from Dominican Republic put their best performance and won all 5 matches. Jamaica was not able to win a single match. Dominican Republic forwarded to the 2nd round. The matches in the 2nd round were played from 7th April to 9th April. The matches were played at Emmastad, Curacao. Dominican Republic played the matches against Netherlands Antilles. 3 matches were won by Dominican Republic while Netherlands Antilles won 2 matches. Dominican Republic qualified for the 3rd round. The 3rd round was played from 22nd September to 24th September. The matches were played between Colombia and Dominican Republic. But players from Dominican Republic could not show good performance. They lost in all matches. Colombia won 5 matches. Dominican Republic was eliminated from the contest.

Overall, performance of Dominican Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
