Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the largest annual international tennis competition. It is contested in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were 16 teams in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Denmark at the 2006 Davis Cup competed with other teams in the Europe/Africa zone. This nation was included in the group III of this zone. Denmark’s team included following players:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

A total of 16 nations took part in the group III of the Europe/Africa zone matches. However, the group was divided in to two venues. The first venue included teams like Andorra, Armenia, Bosnia, Estonia, Herzegovina, Lithuania, Moldova, Monaco and Turkey. The second venue comprised teams like Botswana, Cote D’lvoire, Denmark, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia.

Participation and Performance of Denmark in the 2006 Davis Cup

The teams in Venue 2 were divided into 2 groups. Denmark at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with Namibia, Tunisia and Rwanda. Group B included Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’lvoire and Botswana. The matches were played at BTA Centre (Notswane Courts), Gaborone, Botswana. The matches were held from 26th to 30th July. Denmark played the first set of matches against Rwanda on 26th July. Denmark’s players showed wonderful performance and won all the three matches against Rwanda. Denmark again showed their magical performance in the matches against Namibia. Denmark won all the three matches against Namibia. The matches between Denmark and Tunisia were played on 28th July. Denmark’s players played with winning spirit. They won all three matches against Tunisia. Denmark advanced to 1st to 4th Play-off. The matches between Denmark and Nigeria were played on 29th July. Denmark won 2 matches out of 3. Denmark played the matches against Ghana on 30th July. Denmark maintained their performance in these matches. Denmark won all three matches against Ghana.

On the whole, performance of Denmark at the 2006 Davis Cup was admirable. Denmark got 1st position in final standings. Hence they were promoted to Group II of Europe/Africa zone.
