Czech Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Czech Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the Europe/Africa zone. Czech Republic was included in the Group I.

Along with Czech Republic, the rest of the nations that took part in the Davis Cup in the group I of the Europe/Africa zone were as follows: Belgium, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Luxembourg, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro. The contestants from Czech Republic were determined and confident and had high hopes to excel at the tournament.

Participation and Performance of Czech Republic in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the first round were played from 10th to 12th February. Czech Republic played directly played in the 1st round. Czech Republic received ‘Bye’ from the opponent team. Hence they directly forwarded to the 2nd round. The matches in the 2nd round were played from 7th to 9th April. Czech Republic played the matches against Morocco at Oujda, Morocco. Players from Czech Republic showed magnificent performance. Tomas Zib from Czech Republic defeated Morocco’s Mounir El Aarej by 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 and 6-4. Tomas Berdych from Czech Republic defeated Morocco’s Mehdi Tahiri by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2. Pair of Czech Republic, Tomas Berdych and Lukas Dlouhy defeated Morocco’s pair, Talal Ouahabi and Mehdi Ziadi by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3. Lukas Dlouhy defeated Mehdi Ziadi by 6-2, 6-1. Tomas Zib defeated Mehdi Tahiri by 6-4, 7-5. Thus Czech Republic won all the five matches against Morocco.

Czech Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup showed amazing performance. As a result, they got the promotion to World Group Play-off.
