Participation and Performance of Cyprus in the 2006 Davis Cup

Cyprus at the 2006 Davis Cup initially played in the first round play offs. For the first round play offs, Egypt was the opponent of Cyprus. In this set of matches, Cyprus won three out of the five matches and advanced to the first round. In the first round, Cyprus competed against Bulgaria. These matches were held from 7th to 9th of April. The venue for this leg of the tournament was the TC Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In the second round, Cyprus won only two matches. Both the matches were won by the same player. Marcos Baghdatis defeated Ilia Kushev in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. In the second match against Yordan Kanev, Baghdatis put up a fabulous show of his talent and won even this match in straight sets. Marcos won 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. However, at the end of the first round, Cyprus had won only two of the five matches that it played against Bulgaria. Thus, the hopes of all the players in the Cyprus’ team and the fans back home were disappointed due to the first round exit of their nation.

On the whole, performance of Cyprus at the 2006 Davis Cup was poor. However, the team was neither promoted nor relegated to any other group in its zone.
