Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Cuba at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the Americas Zone. Cuba was included in the group III.

Along with Cuba, group III included many other teams as well. The nations that had sent their players to play against one another in the group III of the Americas zone were Costa Rica, Bahamas, El Salvador Haiti, Honduras, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago. All the contestants from the Cuba had worked hard and were ready to showcase their finest talents to the entire world.,

Participation and Performance of Cuba in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the Group III were played at Maya Country Club, Santa Tecla, El Salvador on clay court. The matches were held from 14th to 18th June. There were total 8 participating nations. They were divided into 2 groups. Cuba at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with Costa Rica, El Salvador and Haiti. Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago were placed in Group A. Cuba played the matches against El Salvador on 14th June. Cuba’s players could not perform well. They were able to win just single match. El Salvador won 2 matches. The matches between Cuba and Costa Rica were played on 15th June. Cuba’s players played with determination and won 2 matches. Costa Rica was able to win a single match. Cuba showed wonderful performance in the matches against Haiti. The matches were played on 16th June. Cuba won all the three matches against Haiti. Cuba advanced to the 1st to 4th Play-off. Cuba played the matches against Puerto Rico on 17th June. Cuba won 2 matches, while Puerto Rico won just single match. The matches between Cuba and Bahamas were played on 18th June. Cuba’s players again showed their wonder. They won all three matches against Bahamas.

The performance of Cuba at the 2006 Davis Cup was really remarkable. They were promoted to Group II of Americas Zone due to their hard efforts.
