Croatia at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Croatia at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the World Group of the tournament.

Along with Croatia, 15 other teams battled it out against one another in the World Group category. Those teams were Australia, Argentina, Belarus, Chile, Austria, France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.

Participation and Performance of Croatia in the 2006 Davis Cup

Croatia was placed in top group of Davis Cup competition. That was the World Group. The matches in the 1st round were played from 10th to 12th February. Croatia played the first set of matches against Austria at Graz, Austria. Croatia’s Mario Ancic defeated Austria’s Jurgen Melzer by 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3. Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic defeated Austria’s Stefan Koubek by 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4. Croatia’s pair, Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic defeated Austria’s pair, Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer by 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and 8-6. Austria’s Alexander Peya defeated Croatia’s Ivan Cerovic by 4-6, 6-2 and 6-4. Austria’s Stefan Koubek defeated Croatia’s Marin Cilic by 6-1, 7-5. Croatia won 3 matches against Austria. Croatia qualified for the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals were played from 7th to 9th April. Croatia played the matches against Argentina at Zagreb, Croatia. Ivan Ljubicic from Croatia defeated Argentina’s Agustin Calleri by 6-7, 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 and 6-2. Argentina’s David Nalbadian defeated Croatia’s Marin Cilic by 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2

Argentina’s pair, Jose Acasuso and David Nalbadian defeated Croatia’s pair, Marin Cilic and Ivan Ljubicic by 6-4, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-4. Ivan Ljubicic defeated David Nalbadian by 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4. Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela defeated Croatia’s Sasa Tuksar 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 and 7-6. Croatia won 2 matches, while Argentina won 3 matches. Croatia could not forward to the semifinals. Croatia at the 2006 Davis Cup showed average performance.
