Along with Chile, 15 other teams battled it out against one another in the World Group category. Those teams were Australia, Argentina, Belarus, Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States. All the players were very determined to excel at the games and help their team win the Davis Cup.

Participation and Performance of Chile in the 2006 Davis Cup

Chile at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first round matches against Slovak Republic. These matches were played from the 10th to the 12th February. In this set, the contenders from Chile displayed their mettle and won four out of the total five matches played. Chile thus successfully advanced to the quarterfinal round of the tournament. In the quarterfinal round, Chile faced the United States of America. The Americans are far experienced than the players from Chile in the tennis world. Yet, the team of Chile did not fumble under pressure and gave a tough fight to the Americans. Out of the five matches, three were won by the US while two were won by the players from Chile. Paul Capdeville defeated James Blake and won the match 6-3, 6-4. Another player from Chile, Fernando Gonzalez defeated the same player and established a victory by winning the match 6-7, 0-6, 7-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Thus, at the end of the quarterfinal round, Chile was successful in winning only two of the total five matches. Thus, Chile’s dream of winning the Davis Cup came to a tragic end at the quarterfinal level itself. However, the performance given by all the competitors in the team of Chile was commendable.
On the whole, performance of Chile at the 2006 Davis Cup was worth a lot of praise.
