Canada at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Algeria at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the Europe/Africa zone. Algeria was included in the group II. The team of Algeria at the Cup was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The group I of the Americas zone comprised of a total 6 countries. Along with Canada, the remaining 5 nations were Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. The performers in all the teams showed an equal level of flair for the game and endurance. The matches that were played in this group yielded many exciting moments which was a delight for all the spectators.

Participation and Performance of Canada in the 2006 Davis Cup

Canada at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches in the first round play offs against Venezuela. These matches were played from 21st to 23rd of July. The first match was played between Frank Dancevic and Daniel Vallverdu. Dancevic from Canada won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. in the next match, another player from Canada, Philip Bester defeated his rival by winning the match 7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The fabulous performance by the players from Canada did not stop at this. The men’s doubles match was won by Canadian players as well. Thus, at the end of the first round play off matches, Canada had won three of the five matches and advanced to the first round of the tournament. The first round however proved to be lucky for the Canadian players since the entire team got a bye and Canada directly reached the second round. The second round was held from 7th to 9th of April at the Centre Deportivo Chapultepec, A.C, Mexico City, Mexico. In this set of matches, the Canadian players were thrashed completely by the Mexican competitors.

Out of the total five matches, Canada was successful in winning only one match. The remaining four matches were won by Mexico. Thus, Canada displayed good talent at the Davis Cup but was out in the second round of the tournament.
On the whole, performance of Canada at the 2006 Davis Cup was creditable.
