Participation and Performance of Bulgaria in the 2006 Davis Cup

Bulgaria at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first round matches against Cyprus. The first round matches were held from 7th to 9th April at the TC Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In the first match, Kanev from Bulgaria was defeated by the layer from the opponent team, Baghdatis. Baghdatis won the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. However in the second match, Ilia Kushev defeated Kallias 6-3, 6-2, 7-5. In the men’s doubles match, Ilia Kushev and Ivaylo Traykov won against their rivals by winning the match 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0. Out of the remaining two matches, one match was won by Bulgarian player while the other was won by a player from Cyprus. Thus, having won three out of the total five matches in the first round, Bulgaria progressed to the 2nd round of the tournament. In the second match, Hungary was the opponent of Bulgaria. The players from Hungary were equally talented and that showed in the results. This time, exactly reverse of the previous result happened. Bulgaria lost three matches and won only two.

Bulgarian players gave their best shots to win as many matches as possible but the effort was of no use. The two matches were won by Todor Enev and Ilia Kushev against Denes Lukacs and Sebo Kiss respectively. Thus, Bulgaria at the 2006 Davis Cup was out of the tournament in the second round of the event. However the players were satisfied with the performance of their team.
On the whole, performance of Bulgaria at the 2006 Davis Cup was commendable. Bulgaria was neither promoted nor relegated for the Davis Cup of the year 2007.
