Brazil at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Brazil at the 2006 Davis Cup battled with other nations in the Americas zone in the group I. the team of Brazil at the Cup was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The group I of the Americas zone comprised of a total 6 countries. Along with Brazil, the remaining 5 nations were Canada, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. The performers in all the teams showed an equal level of flair for the game and endurance. The matches that were played in this group yielded many exciting moments which was a delight for all the spectators.

Participation and Performance of Brazil in the 2006 Davis Cup

Brazil at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first round matches of the tournament against Peru. Flavio Saretta battled it out on court against Ivan Miranda of Peru. Flavio however easily defeated Ivan having won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. In the next match, Brazilian player Ricardo Mello lost to Luis Horna from Peru when Horna won the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. in the next three matches, Brazilian players once again put up their best performance and won all the three matches. Thus, having won four out of five matches in the first round, Brazil advanced to the second round of the tournament. Then, in the second round, Brazil faced Ecuador, a team inferior to Brazil in terms of experience on court. The first match was played between Flavio Saretta and Giovanni Lapentti from Ecuador. Flavio displayed unique aggression in his game and won the match in straight sets 7-6, 6-4. The next match proved to be a neck to neck fight since both the players matched each others’ talent.

However, Ricardo Mello won the match against Nicolas Lapentti 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. The third and the fourth matches as well yielded victories for Brazil. Thus, at the end of the second round, Brazil emerged as the winner in its group. The happiness of all the Brazilians knew no bounds since their nation was now going to be included in the World group of the tournament the following year.
On the whole, performance of Brazil at the 2006 Davis Cup was astonishing. Brazil emerged as one of the winning nations and was promoted to the World Group of 2007.
