A total of 16 nations took part in the group III of the Europe/Africa zone matches. However, the group was divided in to two venues. The first venue included teams like Andorra, Armenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Monaco and Turkey. The second venue comprised teams like Botswana, Cote D’lvoire, Denmark, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia.

Participation and Performance of Botswana in the 2006 Davis Cup

Botswana at the 2006 Davis Cup played in the group B of the round robin tournament. BTA Centre (Notswane Courts), Gaborone, Botswana was the venue for the matches. The three sets of matches that Botswana played were against Cote D’lvoire, Ghana and Nigeria. On the 26th of July, players from Botswana tested their mettle against competitors from Cote D’lvoire. In these matches, all the three games were won by the opponent team and Botswana athletes had to face a terrible defeat. Then on the 27th of July, team Botswana once again stepped in to the court for a matches against Ghana. This time, players from Botswana showed a little improvement and won one match as against two won by Ghana. In the third set of matches however, Botswana slipped again and lost all the three matches to the worthy players from Nigeria. Thus, at the end of the round robin leg of the tournament, Botswana stood at the third position in its group and was sent to compete in the 5th to 8th position play off matches.

Even in that round, Botswana displayed a weak show and lost to Tunisia. However against Rwanda, all the three matches were won. The set of matches against Cote D’lvoire was not even played. At the end of the play off matches, Botswana had won just one set of matches that it played and had lost two. The players and all the fans back home were disappointed with their team’s overall performance.
On the whole, performance of Botswana at the 2006 Davis Cup was poor because of which the nation ha to be relegated to the group IV of this zone in 2007.
