Belgium at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Belgium at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the Europe/Africa zone. Belgium was included in the group I. The team of Belgium at the Cup was as follows:

Along with Belgium, the rest of the nations that took part in the Davis Cup in the group I of the Europe/Africa zone were as follows: Czech Republic, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Luxembourg, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro. The contestants from Belgium were determined and confident and had high hopes to excel at the tournament.

Participation and Performance of Belgium in the 2006 Davis Cup

Belgium at the 2006 Davis Cup participated in the first round which was held from the 10th to the 12th of February. However, in the first round, Belgium got a bye and advanced to the second round directly. The second round of the tournament was played from 7th to 9th of April. In this round, Belgium played against Ukraine. The first match of this set was won by Olivier Rochus of Belgium when he defeated Orest Tereshchuk in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. In the second match as well, another player from Belgium established a victory. Kristof Vliegen won against Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 7-6. The third match was a men’s doubles match and the teams that battled out against each other were Olivier Rochus and Kristof Vliegen versus Serqei Bubka and Sergiy Stakhovsky. Even this match was won by the dynamic competitors from Belgium 7-6, 6-3, 6-2. This match was then followed by two singles matches. Gilles Elseneer won when he put up a brilliant show against Sergiy Stakhovsky. Elseneer won the game 6-3, 7-6. the lat match of the leg however yielded a different result. This time, Serqei Bubka from Ukraine won the match and surprised everyone.

At the end of the tournament, Belgium had won four out of the five matches that it played and had emerged as one of the winning nation. Thus, all the players in the team of Belgium as well as all the fans back home were extremely happy since Belgium had got as chance to compete in the World Group for the year 2007.
On the whole, performance of Belgium at the 2006 Davis Cup was above par. Belgium was also promoted to World Group in 2007.
