Belarus at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Belarus at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the World Group of the tournament. The team of Belarus at the Cup was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Along with Belarus, 15 other teams battled it out against one another in the World Group category. Those teams were Australia, Argentina, Austria, Chile, Croatia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.

Participation and Performance of Belarus in the 2006 Davis Cup

Belarus at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first round matches from 10th to the 12th of February. The players from Belarus battled it out against players from Spain. The first match saw Max Mirnyi play against Tommy Robredo. Mirnyi won the match 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. in the second match, Voltchkov faced David Ferrer. Voltchkov’s talent fetched him a win in this match when he defeated his opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Then, in the doubles matches, Mirnyi and Voltchkov defeated Lopez and Verdasco 7-6, 6-4, 7-5. The next match proved to be fatal for Belarus where Tarasevitch got defeated from Ferrer 2-6, 1-6. Vladimir Voltchkov then won the match that he played against Robredo by 7-6, 6-3. Thus, having won four of the five matches, Belarus progressed to the quarter final round. In the quarter final round, Belarus played against Australia.

However, the Belarusian players could not repeat their fabulous performance and lost all the five matches to Australia. Belarus at the 2006 Davis Cup was thus out of the tournament in the quarter final round.
On the whole, performance of Belarus at the 2006 Davis Cup was commendable
