Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The group III of the Asia/Oceania zone consisted of a total eight teams. Those eight teams were Bahrain, Bangladesh, Iran, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The matches of this group gave out some surprising results. Reputed teams put up a poor performance and had to be relegated whereas the teams which had given sub standard performances in the previous cups were promoted to higher groups.

Participation and Performance of Bangladesh in the 2006 Davis Cup

Bangladesh at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in the group B at the round robin tournament. On the 19th of July, at the Manila Polo Club, Makati City, Manila, Philippines, Bangladesh played against Bahrain. This leg yielded poor results for the Bangladeshi players as they won only a single match and lost the remaining two. The second set of matches was played against Iran the very next day. The disappointment of loss at the previous day’s games had made the Bangladeshi competitors nervous. This nervousness showed off in the games and this time, the players put up even more ridiculous show. Bangladesh lost all the three matches to Iran. However, in the third set again, one match was won by Bangladesh against Saudi Arabia and two were lost. Thus, at the end of the round robin leg, Bangladesh was sent to compete in the 5th to 8th position play off matches.

Even in these matches, players from Bangladesh did not perform well and won only two of the matches. At the end of the tournament, Bangladesh stood at the last position in its group and had to be relegated to the group IV of the Asia/Oceania zone in 2007.
On the whole, performance of Bangladesh at the 2006 Davis Cup was dire.
