Bahrain at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men�s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Bahrain at the 2006 Davis Cup played in the Asia/Oceania zone. Bahrain team was placed in the group III of this zone. The team of Bahrain at the Cup was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The group III of the Asia/Oceania zone consisted of a total eight teams. Those eight teams were Bahrain, Bangladesh, Iran, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The matches of this group gave out some surprising results. Reputed teams put up a poor performance and had to be relegated whereas the teams which had given sub standard performances in the previous cups were promoted to higher groups.

Participation and Performance of Bahrain in the 2006 Davis Cup

Bahrain at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in the group B of the round robin leg of the tournament. The first set of matches that Bahrain played was on the 19th of July against Bangladesh. Out of the three matches, Bahrain won two and lost one. However in the next set of matches against Saudi Arabia, players from Bahrain failed to maintain their endurance and lost two matches to the opponent. Just a single match was won against Saudi Arabia. The third set yielded absolutely poor result for the Bahrain team. All the three matches were lost to the players from Iran. Thus, at the end of the round robin leg, Bahrain was sent to compete in the 5th to 8th position play off matches.

Even in this round, players from Bahrain gave a sub standard performance. The first set of matches against Bangladesh was not played. In the second set against Singapore, only one match was won while in the third set against Vietnam, all the matches were lost. Thus, having won only 1 of the 3 sets of matches in the play offs, Bahrain stood at the 7th position in the final rankings of the teams in the Asia/Oceania zone.
On the whole, performance of Bahrain at the 2006 Davis Cup was disappointing.
